This removal was carried out on a 2020 Mercedes GLE 300d, however the principle is the same for this style of steering wheel across the 2019–2023 Mercedes range.
Tools & Equipment Required
- 10mm socket & ratchet
- T10 Torx bit
- Trim removal tool, Allen key or flat-head screwdriver
-
Disconnect the Battery
Locate the battery and disconnect the negative terminal. On the GLE (RHD vehicles) the battery is located under the passenger seat — slide the seat forwards and upwards to access it. Remove the trim panel to reach the negative terminal. Use a 10mm socket to remove the terminal clamp and stow the cable somewhere it cannot make contact with the battery.
-
Remove the Airbag
Using a trim tool, Allen key or screwdriver, locate the two soft points on the steering wheel carcass — one at roughly the 5 o'clock position and one at the 7 o'clock position. Pierce through the rubber at each point to engage the spring clip. This releases the airbag from its mounting points.
-
Unplug the Airbag Connector
Once the airbag is free, unplug the airbag connector by depressing the two plastic retaining clips. Once disconnected, place the airbag face-up in a safe location away from your work area.
-
Disconnect the Wiring Harness
Repeat the disconnection process for the steering wheel wiring harness connector (brown connector).
-
Remove the Centre Bolt
Use a T10 Torx bit to remove the steering wheel centre bolt.
-
Remove the Steering Wheel
With the centre bolt removed, pull the steering wheel directly towards you in a straight line to remove it from the vehicle.
